First Star ASU Academy Student Application

We are delighted to invite you to apply to the First Star Arizona State University Academy.

To the student applying:
Thank you for taking the time to submit your confidential application. The Academy is a free, comprehensive, college access program designed to provide system-impacted students—including youth who have experienced foster care, have an incarcerated parent(s), or are served under McKinney-Vento—with academic support, encouragement, and enrichment to assist you on your college readiness journey.

Scholars engage in a variety of active learning opportunities including academic support, social and cultural activities, field trips, service learning, and recreational experiences. In addition to a summer immersion program, students and their caregivers receive individual support during the academic year through monthly Saturday Academies, education advocacy, and caregiver workshops.

Steps to apply and eligibility:

Students are eligible if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Impacted by foster care (current or former involvement with the Arizona Department of Child Safety or Tribal Agency)
• Have a parent or guardian who is incarcerated
• Served under the McKinney-Vento Act

Additional requirements:

• Able to participate in the summer residential component at the university and monthly Saturday sessions
• Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and good attendance during the current and previous school year (If GPA is not met, an academic plan will be developed with the scholar)
• Demonstrate maturity and potential to thrive in a college-prep environment

Application checklist:

• Submit a complete application 
• Have two adults complete the Adult Recommendation portion of the application
• Submit your most recent transcript, attendance record, and discipline log from your current school to the attachments portion of this application or email them to [email protected]
• Complete an interview via phone call or Zoom with First Star ASU staff
